What Is Stalking?

Being stalked is a terrifying experience that leaves a person feeling frightened and powerless.

Stalking, or “obsessional following,” is when an abuser monitors your actions and movements. It's a repeated harassing or threatening behavior by an individual, such as following a person, appearing at a person's home or place of business, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or objects, or vandalizing a person's property, according to the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime (OVC). But in an intimate partner relationship, your partner can still stalk you. Oftentimes, this happens when the relationship is ending.

Examples Of Things Stalkers Do:

● They turn up at places that you regularly go to.
● They secretly follow you.
● They are spying on you.
● They send you threatening cards or letters in the mail.
● They leave threatening phone messages for you.
● They damage your personal property.
● They threaten people that you’re close to.
● Ignore restraining orders.
● Physically attack the victim.
● Use a GPS system to track the location of the victim.
● Use technology to gain access to the victim's email account or track computer usage.

The Netflix series 'You' illustrates so many of these signs Benny has listed! Its a great Drama to watch while also being very educational. The show portrays how while you may think a person is being nice, thoughtful or even romantic they actually may be a dangerous stalker taking advantage.

You are right Leia, I'm also following up on that series... learning a lot from it.

#2 However, I have read criticisms that state the show romanticises stalking and thus making it appear acceptable or even desired behaviour. A lot of this rests on the attractiveness and charming character of Joe.

What are your thoughts on this Benny?

It's a series and I guess it's part of their strategy to get people to watch it. But beyond the entertainment, I always try to get the message, that's most important for me.

I think Pop Culture Detective do a lot of good videos about how movies "normalises" unwanted behaviour like stalking.

Really makes you think a second time next time watching a movie! I can really recommend to go watch some of his films!
